departure
Our story begins at the edge of a river. We’ve left the road behind. Power lines don’t extend beyond this point. The last bar of phone signal has flickered out. We stand at the river’s edge, in the silt and sand and watch the flow into which we are about to step.
The moment of departure on a journey of exploration is the moment of the scales tipping. When the promise of the unknown outweighs the density of the familiar. It is a moment held between two opposing magnets. A repelling force that pushes you out into uncharted territory. A force of attraction that pulls you towards discovery.
In your left hand you hold a smooth, river-tumbled pebble, the colour of the land around you. It contains all the things that hold you in place. In your right hand sits the faceted, shining surface of a hard, crystalline rock. It is alien, not of this ground. Its surface gives no clue as to what lies inside it.
Once the scales have tipped it takes great effort to remain. It costs to fight against magnetic force. If it is your right hand that sinks a little deeper with the weight of the unknown then exploration is calling.
Cast the stones in the river. It is time to depart.
