RETREAT

The time has come to leave the natural light of the outside world behind. We gather our belongings; these lifelines of water, food, fire and illumination and begin the descent further into the earth to our cave retreat.

This is not a retreat in the sense of going home. Nor is it a retreat of defeated withdrawal. A cave retreat carries with it the implicit promise of re-emergence. It is a space of germination.

As we burrow deeper into the ground, over tumbled rock, down cliff faces, between boulders the size of houses and under alien arches of stone, we take with us the seeds of re-imagination. In the darkness, in the earth, is where we go to find the space and silence in which to plant our new beginnings.

In time our new perspectives and fresh ideas will push their shoots up into the world above. But their roots will remain in this underworld, in the visions that appear in places dark enough, separate enough and untouched enough to see the future clearly.

We are retreating, so that we might advance.

ON RETREAT

In this interactive workshop on the topic of retreat we explore how to build retreat experiences powerful enough to take forward with you into day to day life, share the ways in which potent retreat memories can support you in key moments wherever you are and look at why meditation and reflection are vital even when it feels like there is no time for retreat.
