diversity
If you were to look down at the ground around your feet; just one tiny patch of the forest, you would find yourself in the presence of a mass congregation. Caterpillars, ants, beetles, spiders, fungi, fern…Every imaginable colour. Every texture and pattern. You could stand still for a moment and in that moment share space with a legion of life.
We are on the forest path, climbing higher, the roar of the river now a silvery high pitch of distant water. The light under the canopy is deep, dark green. The air seems stiller, although this is just an illusion; the air is thick with the activity of wings large and small.
It feels like a trick, these moments of still stock-taking. The abundance of life is too much. Too ornamented and adorned to be real. The tally of the remarkable too preposterous, as if, just out of sight a stage manager of the rainforest runs ahead, placing set pieces of flora and fauna; arranging an embarrassment of riches.
Then… lift your gaze again. To the path winding up into the always gloaming light of the forest. To the clearing through the trees. To the miles and miles, hundreds of miles, as far as the eye can see, of patches of life just like this one.
This is the landscape where diversity reaches it’s zenith.
