DAWN CHORUS

Field recording by Mendel Kaelen

Introduction by Tamsin Cunningham

This recording was captured in the early hours of the morning just off the path that leads from the Shuar settlement to the Tayos Cave; a place where the sound of human life is present but not central. Here the moment of dawn breaking is experienced by a multitude of species, from a multitude of perspectives. Unlike the soundscapes that many of us are used to, where the sound of humanity takes centre-stage, here the call of man is just one among many forest dwellers.

As you listen to the forest awake for day; the chorus of insects singing in harmony; the sound of human voices and the neighing of horses, what different perspectives can you imagine? What might this moment be like for the insects and birds you hear, for the trees emerging out of the pre-dawn mist into the warmth of the sun?

As you listen to these others, can you imagine them listening to you?
